Hey Subscriber First Name, When I say AI what do you think of? Is it a world full of tremendous opportunity and an abundance of potential, or is it a world full of unemployment where humans lack purpose. These are two extremes and the truth may lie somewhere in the middle, but the as it stands, no one really knows where it’s going. We can see the momentum of AI both at home and in the workplace, beneath all that however, I think there is also a quieter tension building. How do we use it without losing ourselves in the process? ... Not just operationally, but humanly. How do we use AI without losing our voice? How do we embrace speed without sacrificing thoughtfulness? How do we create efficiency without stripping out empathy? How do we move with the times, whilst still holding on to the things that make communication, leadership and culture work? Because for all the headlines, all the tools, all the prompts and all the productivity gains, work is still human. Leadership is still human, trust is still human, culture is still human, communication is still human. And that, for me, is where storytelling matters more than ever. In a world of prompts and productivity, storytelling becomes the anchor. It brings us back to people, forces us to think about meaning, not just output. It asks us to consider not only what we are saying, but how it will land, who it is for, and what story people may already be telling themselves when they receive it. So, in this month’s Allotment, here are five thoughts on how we can use AI without losing ourselves. Start with people When organisations begin talking about AI, it is easy for the conversation to become dominated by tools, systems, capabilities and efficiencies. But people do not experience change as a platform. They experience it as a feeling. For some, AI may feel exciting, for others it may feel unsettling, and for many it will be both at once. That is why the best starting point is not simply, what can this tool do? It is also, what might this change feel like for our people? … Before adoption comes understanding. Keep judgement close AI can help us get moving, structure ideas, summarise information, improve clarity and remove friction. But judgement is something else. Judgement is knowing what matters in this moment, it is sensing tone, understanding context. It is recognising how something may land with one audience differently than another. It is knowing when something is technically right, but emotionally off. That is still deeply human work. We must stay close to the judgement that makes leadership, communication and decision-making feel considered and real. Protect the human tone One of the risks in a world of AI-generated content is that communication can start to sound polished, but oddly distant. The words may be right and the structure may be good, yet something can still feel missing. That something is humanity. People do not just listen for information, they listen for tone, honesty, and whether there is actually a person behind the message. That is why storytelling matters so much. It reminds us that communication is not only about getting the words out, it is about helping those words land with meaning, empathy and truth. Understand the story underneath Whilst businesses may talk about AI in terms of productivity, innovation and progress, individuals may be experiencing it through a very different story. What does this mean for me? Am I expected to know more than I currently know? Will I get left behind? Is this here to support me, or replace parts of what I do? These are not irrational questions, they are human ones. If leaders do not recognise the story people are already living through, they risk pushing change in a way that creates compliance on the surface, but distance underneath. Storytelling helps here because it forces us to think about perspective, asking us to step into the audience’s shoes. Let storytelling anchor it all For me, this is where it all comes together. Storytelling is not a fluffy extra. It is one of the most practical disciplines we have for helping communication, leadership and change land well. It helps us ask better questions, such as … Who is this for? What do they need? What are they likely feeling? What needs to be clear? What needs to be handled with care? Without that lens, AI adoption risks becoming too mechanical, too functional, and too disconnected from the human experience wrapped around it.

The future may well be accelerated by AI. But trust will still be built person to person, connection will still be human, and leadership will still be human. People who navigate this period best, in my view, will not simply be the ones who adopt AI fastest. They will be the ones who know how to use it wisely, whilst still sounding like themselves, leading like themselves, and creating space for others to feel part of the journey too. Because in the race to adopt AI, the real challenge is not just learning how to use it … it is making sure we do not lose ourselves in the process.
